Hello
readers! This is our first blog of the 2013-2014 school year, and I decided to
start off by reporting on the results of the BIG MOVE. The middle school, the junior high, and the high
school are now all living and learning under the same roof. Thus far, we have had no catastrophes, at
least none of which I am aware. Middle school moms can relax; seniors are not
stuffing 5th graders in lockers. Ironically, the most common student complaint
I have heard is from the seniors. It seems that 7th graders think
they need to run to lunch…to class…to the bathroom. It also seems they are running into and over upperclassmen in their
haste. One petite senior girl reported, “This one little kid almost took me
out!” (More on this in the first issue of The
Panther.) We are adjusting and ironing out wrinkles.
The most common teacher complaint is, “My
room is so much smaller and there is no storage.” ALL the teachers say this.
This is true for the middle school teachers, but all the high school and junior
high teachers voice the same grievance (including me). However, I have given
this some thought, and correct me if I’m wrong…but I believe this is
statistically impossible. Somebody had to move into a room that was equivalent
or bigger. Perhaps we should form a committee to investigate.
The custodial/maintenance staff members all
deserve a medal. They painted, they renovated, they rewired, they carpeted,
they glued, they cleaned, they sweat, they moved furniture and furniture and
furniture. “We want it in this room…no we
changed our minds, now we want it in this room. No, we don’t like that. Take it
out of here, etc.” And I hate to admit this, but I was one of the teachers who
had them move the most stuff the most often! Therefore, I thank them from the
bottom of my heart.
The first week there was overall sense of
apprehensive optimism, rather like what a bull rider must feel right before
they open the gate. We hung on and we made it through the first week, so I have
a good feeling about the rest of the year.
I also would like to thank the
administrators. They make the difficult decisions and then have to listen to us
complain and whine. Thanks for putting up with me in particular.
So what do I think about the BIG MOVE?
So
far, so good.
